Since carbon dioxide is the principal greenhouse gas,
people speak simply of trading in carbon. Carbon is now tracked and traded like any other commodity, in what are known as the global carbon markets.

In 2009, it was calculated by Bloomberg New Energy Finance that around 8.7 billion tonnes of carbon were traded globally, with a value of US$144 billion.
